Why I love helping our kids

Teens with learning disabilitiesIt was with much anxiety that I left my longstanding job at the college in 2006 to strike out on my own. In 2007, I launched my list serv, and in 2010, this blog was born.

Since then, my private practice has flourished, and I’m working with wonderful proactive parents and their teens.

Am I working harder than ever? Yes. The rewards, though? PRICELESS!

Below, you’ll see a recent example. It’s feedback such as this that lets me know that I am making a difference, however small, and motivates me to continue.

One of my readers e-mailed asking if she could use a few of my articles for a meeting at which she was presenting. Sure, I said, feel free…..spread the knowledge….as long as it stays intact with my name and URL!

Shortly thereafter, I got this message:

Hi Joan,
I just wanted to thank you for your help. I presented twice this past Sat. at our Title One Parent Involvement conference on Transition to College for Students with IEPs. I used 2 of your articles as handouts, and they were each very much appreciated by the parents. I wish we could have had time to discuss your “What Do We Owe Our Kids?”, but I had so much to talk about, I just handed it out. Thanks for helping to support students who have college as their goal.

It’s become pretty clear that we can’t passively lie back, expecting schools to have our kids’ best interests at heart. Most schools never have, and with budget cuts, it’s unlikely they will anytime soon.

College readiness for our kids will occur ONLY when parents like Madeline start grassroots efforts to educate other parents who also have a lot at stake.

After all, who is going to care any more about our kids than we do?

That was a great e-mail. That night, I went to bed exhausted as usual but slept like a baby.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! Nice job, Madeline.
